Special Topic: Tier Ranking Book Tropes

Hi, everyone, and happy weekend! ☀ Today I bring you a special post inspired by the lovely Mara on her booktube channel @BooksLikeWhoa. Mara is one of a handful of favorite bookish YouTube personalities I follow, and she did a great video back in the end of February ranking her favorite book tropes on TierMaker. Although I think my preferences are pretty similar to hers (hence why I love following her 😉), I decided to give it a shot to see if there’s anything that surprises me or if there are any interesting trends.

I hope you’ll give it a go along with me and let me know how yours ends up! ✨

Mara’s original video contains more details on what each card means if you’re not sure

Alrighty, popping open the TierMaker Mara made, here’s where mine came out to:

I had so much fun making this! Taking a glance over the rankings I feel like my reading preferences definitely shine through. On the very top we have many tropes that are common in Mystery/Thrillers which I’ve been really enjoying – Isolated Closed Circle, Unreliable Narrator, Morally Gray MC, Cults, Morality Chain, Snowed in, Killing in a pattern, Serial Killer- as well as a smattering of other things that I just love (Classic Retelling, Meta Elements, Protective Alpha).

What tropes bubbled to the top of your list? 🙂 Let me know!

  1. Ohh, I like this one! Great post! Definitely will have to check out that tier maker, though looking at it for a bit I guess I will also have to look up what some tropes are, haha.

    1. Thanks!! Yeah some weren’t immediately clear to me until watching Mara’s video, then it was like a revelation like “huh, yeah I’ve seen that!”
